The Hanson family business origins trace back to 1846, when Mary Hanson, wife of a local farmer, saw a growing demand for reliable transport within Huddersfield’s thriving textile trade. She established regular horse-drawn deliveries, carrying raw wool from Longwood to key industrial centres such as Manchester and Leeds. Her initiative marked the beginning of what would become a long-standing family enterprise.

Her son Joseph formalised and expanded the operation as Joseph Hanson & Son, breeding Shire horses and developing general haulage. He expanded the business beyond textile transport, introducing small-scale freight haulage and household removals, establishing the business as a trusted local carrier.

 

As the transport industry evolved in the early 20th century, Hanson embraced new technology. During the 1910s, the company began transitioning from horse-drawn vehicles to steam-powered lorries, followed soon after by petrol-driven transport. For a period, the business also diversified into operating coaches and buses, reflecting a willingness to adapt to changing market demands.

 

Following the Second World War, Hanson shifted its focus toward contract haulage and storage solutions, responding to the needs of a rapidly modernising economy. In 1962, operations were consolidated at a dedicated site on Leeds Road, enabling further expansion into freight handling and logistics services.

 

Today, Hanson remains a proudly family-owned business with a heritage spanning more than 180 years. Despite its modern capabilities and regulatory standing, the company continues to reflect the entrepreneurial spirit on which it was founded, combining deep-rooted family values with forward-thinking logistics expertise.
